EU reiterates ‘resolute commitment’ to nuclear deal

Days after the election of Donald Trump as U.S. president, the European Union reiterated that it would continue efforts to restore ties with Iran in line with last year's nuclear deal.

In his campaign speeches Trump had raised the prospect of rescinding the pact if elected president. Also, Walid Phares, one of Trump's foreign policy advisers, on Thursday said the president-elect is going to demand changes to the nuclear agreement.
"The European Union reiterates its resolute commitment to the (Iran nuclear deal)," the bloc's foreign ministers said in a statement in Brussels.
“The European Union is committed to support the full and effective implementation [of the nuclear deal],” EU foreign ministers say in a statement.
“The European Union is committed to support the full and effective implementation ... by the lifting of nuclear related economic and financial sanctions and engaging with the private sector and economic operators, especially banks, to promote growth in trade and investment,” the statement said.
Under the deal, Iran started getting relief from economic sanctions in exchange for it rolling back its nuclear program.
Following the deal, Iran and the EU have been seeking stronger bilateral ties with senior officials of the two sides reciprocating visits.
The two have specially engaged in “high-level” human rights talks, a debate which has increasingly emerged as an important component for stronger ties between the two sides.
